About the Farmers:
The farmers behind this special matcha are a team of just two, a husband and wife duo, that take no shortcuts. The pair tend meticulously to their small tea fields throughout the year, and recruit a dozen or so helpers to pluck the leaves when they are ready for harvest in early May. This particular farm is located in Gokasho, Uji, an area of Uji that historically had many tea fields. Today, mostly retail tea shops and homes can be found, and only a few fields remain. This matcha comes from one of those remaining fields. Even more special yet is the fact that this tea field sits on the banks of the Uji River. Being so close to this mystical body of water means that the soil of this tea field enjoys a rich minerality that other tea fields in Kyoto do not. Perhaps our favorite part, however, is the kindness and hospitality we feel when we visit this family. In each of our visits, the family welcomes us into their home and serve us countless cups of tea. It's perhaps our favorite place to be in Japan.
